Exploiting synergies between energy vectors for greater efficiency

​The tools developed by CEA-Liten to dimension electrical and thermal networks can help to design network architectures coupling different energy vectors. They have been studied in simulation on the case of Cambridge district in Grenoble, considering the possible synergies between electricity, heat and gas vectors.

In the context of energy transition with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, national and local energy networks are preparing for major changes: massive integration of renewable energies whose production is by nature intermittent and decentralized, appearance of new modes of electric or hydrogen mobility deployment of flexibility solutions, multiplication of energy vectors, and taking in consideration new uses such as energy production by users and energy communities.

Liten has been developing tools for the dimensioning and management of energy systems for several years. It has adapted its use to the joint management of several parallel energy vectors in a global way. In "Carnot Energy du Future Distrisim" project, researchers have developed models of multi-network systems coupling electricity, heat and gas. Then they applied them in the case of Cambridge district to carry out a relevant proof of this concept.

Considering the networks and the means of production which are already established, the tool defines an optimal dimensioning (additional production means, storage...) allowing to satisfy the needs while respecting the technical, economic and environmental limits. This dimensioning takes into account in particular an optimized piloting of the components, in which forecasts and mathematical models will be used in real time to define the trajectories of the relevant control variables according to the energy vectors.
