AEGIR: reducing the costs and duration of energy renovation work

The AEGIR project, funded under Horizon Europe, has just started. It aims to develop modular, renewable and industrialized envelope solutions for the energetic renovation of buildings.

The overall objective is to reduce the costs and time required to carry out energetic renovation works.

Different solution packages for the building renovation markets will be developed within the AEGIR project, in order to meet the needs of different building types, uses and climate zones all over Europe.

The European Commission's objective is to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, i.e. an economy with zero greenhouse gas emissions.

More than 220 million buildings, i.e. 85% of the current building stock, were built before 2001 in accordance with standards that were not very or not sufficiently demanding in terms of their energy consumption and their "carbon footprint". They will still be there in 2050, and renovating them is essential to meet our objectives.

Moreover, the oldest of these non-renovated buildings are the most energy-intensive to maintain indoor environmental conditions. They are often occupied by low-income families in precarious energy situations, i.e. with difficulties in paying energy bills and therefore in maintaining acceptable indoor hygrothermal conditions, and this can lead to health concerns.

AEGIR envelopes, being the interface between the indoor and outdoor conditions of a building, will be designed, manufactured and implemented to improve energy efficiency and indoor environmental conditions.

The CEA at INES is a partner in the project and contributes to the design of the overall AEGIR concept. It will also be involved in the French demonstrator, which will be located in the municipality of Boën-sur-Lignon (42), with a co-construction of the solution with the companies Chazelle, Soprema, Otéis and the local authorities SIEL42 and Boën-sur-Lignon.

The research program includes the industrialization of prefabricated facades, the integration of renewable energy in the envelope, the circular economy with the use of recycled and biosourced materials, the digital twin and the performance guarantee.
